Today as I was chipping loose bottom paint off of my keel, I noticed that i chipped down to a soft shiny metal. Do I need to prime this before bottom paint, or just bottom paint. I use ablative paint. Any thoughts??? Chuck Fort 1983 Hunter 27

Expert advise is best

Chuck, Check with your paint supplier for the best way to prep the lead keel. Also be very conscious of the danger of inhaling any dust you generate. Wear a 3M respirator with charcoal filters. Lead dust can be fatal or at the least, cause brain and liver damage. Larry Wilson

Try the Interlux paint site

Chuck, Take a look at the web site for Interlux paint. They have about everything you need to know regarding painting with their products, as well as some good general painting tips. I believe their product for priming underwater metal is Primocon, although you usually end up needing other related products such as cleaners, thinners, etc. I've had good luck with some of these products, but make sure to follow their directions closely. VC Tar an VC17

I have a 1988 Hunter Legend35,and I use the same stuff I have used for the last 4 years. It's a VC Tar base with VC17 over that. It's not like its going to rust or anything, and it still looks good without the extra expense of doing something that doesnt need to be done. Just my opinion of course.

VC17 etc

RUST, who has seen lead get rusty? I just watched a friend painting the bottom, asked him "why are you using Interlux FG Bottomcote?" That's. VCtar. why are you putting it on top of VC17? Oh that's the way the boat came, I do it every spring. OK I admit, I do not know everything, but I DO know lead does not rust, it does not need a barrier coat, maybe a primer.Give a man a fish....
