Be Carefull!!!

On our old Cat22 I used to chock the wheels GOOD, and then lift the boat with 2, 6 ton bottle jacks I had under 2 4X6 blocks cut to the shape of her bottom. I used wedges on the bunks and 8' 2x4's to keep her upright. Then I would paint those hard to get areas with the roller. (cause I aint puttin my hand in there!)

Bottom Painting

When I painted my 23 on the trailer, I constructed two boat stands, put them under one side of the boat, tightened them up and dropped the bunk on that side. I then sanded and painted that side, recarpeted the bunk, and put it back in place to hold the boat. I had marked the bunk braces to make sure that I put them back in the same spot. Then I repeated the procedure on the other side. Worked very well. R. Wheeler "Rapuzha"

23.5 bottom painting

To paint the bottom while on the trailer I have fabricated two bunks one for the front and one for the rear of the boat. With the boat on the trailer and the trailer blocked to prevent movement I Jack the front of the boat with a bottle jack and take the weight on the front of the boat with a bunk supported with concrete blocks. Then I jack the stern in a similar manner supporting the rare bunk with two stacks of concrete blocks. As I need access to each side of the hull I drop the side bunk for access. So as to prevent slipping of the temporary bunks I paint these areas with anti fouling last. The boat is less stable on the temporary bunks so care should be exercised.

More Ideas

Rather than drop the bunker, I just removed the wheel on one side to lower the trailer further. After it's painted and has dried a while, I placed waxed paper over the bunker pad to keep it from sticking. The waxed paper floated right off when we launched it. It's really hard to get into the keelboard pocket at the hinge. I just used a small brush but it left a small area unpainted. Ken S/V Wouff Hong

Sling it!

Fred, What I did for my 23.5 was to paint as much as I could reach while on the trailer (without using jacks, etc), then located a local boat yard who would be willing to 'rent' me their sling for a day. They picked the boat up off the trailer, set it on stands and I finished off the painting. To do it again, I think I would have just done it all at one time after the boat was picked up. Made the work a lot faster, easier, and safe! Good luck! Kevin s/v Wind Seeker
