Need some advice. Purchased an O'Day 19 and need to paint the bottom. After much research I'm more confused than ever! In preparing to paint the bottom should I sand or not? Should I use a Marine paint remover? Should I prime before putting on the anti fouling paint. Research seems to have led to more confusion. There seems to be little to no consensus on preparing the hull for bottom paint.

Depends if you are keeping it in the water or not. If out of the water I would use a topside paint. If in the water, sand or scrape it to gelcoat, fix any blisters, apply a barrier coat (interlux E2000 for example) and apply the anti fouling of choice for your area. I have been happy with Micron CSC and VC17 in my area. I would use Micron CSC if I was doing it again. Use different colour antifouling coats so you can see where it is wearing. Somtimes, depending on the combination you pick, the first antifouling coat should be applied before the barrier coat is completely hard.
