Anyone use Benjiman Moore Acrylic latex paint to paint the bottom of your sailboat? It's an older boat 1982 25 Macgregor, and the bottom paint is faded pretty good. So I thought I would throw some exterior house paint on, pretty blue. What does everyone think? thanks, Jerry P.S. this boat will be trailered.

One question

Why? To make it look good? Just never it alone. The old paint is not hurting anything. No one see it underwater! You'll be sorry if you do!

why not!

Yes, to make it look good! why not. What would happen if I did paint it? would it peel off when it got wet? Jerry

Hey, it's your boat,

I'm sure that you didn't picked the best paint, but it won't sink the boat. Go for it. Tom s/v GAIA

That's interesting

I am going to assume you know that the purpose of boat bottom paint is to inhibit marine growth, not just to look pretty, and that house paint won't fill that bill. If you are taking the boat out of the water after each use, you don't really need bottom paint. That being said, I would worry about putting plain old latex paint on your boat. House paint is not formulated to be underwater, but it does seem to be remarkably resilient, so I bet it would look good for awhile if you boat in fresh water. Of course when it does come off, it will come off ugly, peeling and blistering. Remember too that latex paint is formulated to be applied over primer or other latex paint, so if you want it to last and look pretty, do your prep work.

Don't

This would be a waste of time and paint. If you want the bottom to look goos put on a real marine bottom paint. There are plenty of colors and a 25' boat will not need much.

I agree with Steve

yes use it on the boat and the car. It will look great but remember use a rollar not a brush.

Not Latex

Latex paint is water-based. It does okay when it gets rained on, but it's not designed to be submerged. As well, it does not adhere well to plastics and resins (i.e. fiberglass). I'd be worried about it rubbing off on your bunks when you load it after a day of sailing. Save your money, I don't think it would look good for very long. Why not just use epoxy or a good bottom coat? I don't think you'd wind up spending more than three or four times the cost of a latex paint for a good epoxy.

Why bother at all

if you trailer the boat, wait till it's out of the water. While its at the ramp, dripping dry, gives you time to prepare the latex, so you can roll it on and when you're done you can drive home and it'll be dry and look good in your driveway. Good idea, huh? Keep it up Ctskip

OK, you got me...

Your right, I'm wrong. You all seem to be against me on using this paint. I will spend the extra buck to get the proper bottom paint, do you forgive me?? :(

...but never ask a question like that again. It is a boat and anything you use on it must be "marine" grade and cost much more than household stuff. ;-)

after about the first year of looking for a boat i had a list of standared questions to ask the seller .the first was is your boat painted with house paint . if the answer was yes i could then look elsewhere. not a good sign . Mike
