I have a catalina 22 that needs the bottom redone, the paint now is very faded and worn through in some spots. I was reading some archives and found that people who trailer like I do dont even repaint the bottom they just keep it clean. My boat is in the water twice a week and only for a few hours at a time then I trailer it home and wash it off. Ia this a good idea? can I save the time and money of repainting? If I do just sand off the old paint do I seal the bottom or leave it bare? thx.

Just clean it

If you do not strip the old paint off, then just a cleaning should do the trick. If you decide to remove the bottom paint, you may want to apply an epoxy barrier coat, just to keep it well sealed. Regards, Ted

Bottompaint on trailerables

Hi Rudy - The primary purpose of bottompaint is to keep crud from growing on the bottom when the boat sits for periods of time. If you keep in on a trailer, just keep it clean. I'd sand off the paint that's there - it's probably unsightly and just slows your boatspeed down! Best, Trevor

same problem

My boat had/has faded and flakeing I am about 80% finished with removing it. My intention was to repaint with non anti fouling white teflon bottom paint. As I get closer to decision time I am leaning more towards a good urethane since more colors are available. I may consider painting all the way up to the rail. Since I don't have problem with organic growth in my driveway I don't plan on using an Anti fouling paint. p.s. May last boat was urethane painted bottom, was used about 20 days a year, spent a week at a time in the water 2 times a year, and lasted 11 years until I sold it.
