Can anyone give me an estimate on how much bottom paint I will need to cover the bottom of my 1989 33.5? Also, any recommendations on which paints work best in the Pacific Northwest?

Check international paint's web site

International/interlux's web-sight has a set of interactive screens that will calculate the amount of bottom paint you will need for your boat. I would also rely on their very good technical sheets, again on-line, in choosing an appropriate paint. Dor what its worth I would use Micron Extra. Jack

phil, here is the formula for bottom area:

Lenght * Beam * .85 = bottom sqft Then you will need to divide this number into the the coverage area per gallon to get the number of coats per gallon. the coverage area varies among different types of paint. I just did my boat. my bottom sq ft = 195 the paint I selected covered 400 sqft per gallon this gave me two coats per gallon. I wanted 3 coats so I bought two extra quarts.

I just had my 33.5 bottom painted. I used Interlux Micro Optima. It was rated #3 in Practical Sailor a month ago. We'll see how it holds up. Brent

H-33.5 Bottom Paint usage

Phil, I have a H-33.5 (1990) and have painted the bottom the last 3 years with Pettit Trinadad SR and it took 1 Gal and a 1/2 Qt. to do one coat. If it hasn't been painted in awhile, you probably want 2 coats at least. So, 2 Gal and 1 Qt should do it. I used a roller on most of the bottom. Coverage may be different if it's done all with a brush. Dick Carey

Hi Phil, I used two gallons of WM's ablative...

when we did two plus coats on the bottom of our H28 and had about a quart left over. Picked it up on sale. Still in good shape after two seasons. I would go with black. Marine repair experts claim it holds up better, plus it looks classy compared to blue or red. You can get about a season per coat. Hold back about a pint for those few small areas (under the keel) when the travel lift comes to get your boat for splash day. You can brush on two to three heavy coats...most marinas understand. The fresh paint can go in the water even though it is not cured. Amazing stuff. A fresh coat sets in about ten minutes when the weather is warmer. Terry
