Can anyone tell me who manufactures VC17, and can it be applied over an ablative such as Bottomcote (Interlux)

West Marine

Dan, West Marine Catalog has a great deal of information and charts on this subject. I don't have it with me now to answer your question, but thats an easy resource. Charlie Kilmer "Good Medicine"

Softer over Hard, not the reverse

V17 can be bought through West Marine, Boat US, etc., at discount prices. V17 should be able to be painted over a hard bottom paint such as Trinidad, but the reverse would not be good as it would not hold. As noted in the other posting, West Marine is an excellent source to get a second opinion, however. I would make a call to them via their 800 #

Try it!

You may be suprised at what you can get away with. See if you can find someone with a little in a can and give it a try. You got nothing to loose! It doesn't always go by the book. Good Luck, Dan Arsenault

VC-17

Dan, I think VC-17 is also manufactured by Interlux, and is considered a 'co-polymer ablative' paint. What makes VC-17 different from other co-polymer paints is that VC-17 has Teflon in its mix, and a MUCH smaller percentage of the anti-fouling agent ('biocide') in it-- Half as much as CSC Micron, if memory serves correctly. I don't remember if VC can be applied over Bottom-Cote or not. I agree with Charlie and Dakota Jim, you could contact West Marine, or check out the section on bottom paint in their catalog. You could also contact Interlux- they have a web page at http://www.interlux.com , and there should be contact info on that page... Some other comments about VC-17- It's not sold by the gallon, like most other bottom paints... It takes 5 cans of VC-17 to get a gallon of paint. Once you figure out the coverage area, it costs about the same to paint with VC-17 as it does with CSC Micron (extra? Plus? I can't remember the 'new' designator for CSC...). I'm planning on using the VC-17 because my boat lives on a trailer most of the time, and I think the teflon will help the bottom paint stand up to the abuses of trailering. If you leave the boat in the water, especially in salt water, you may want to consider another paint. --Jon Bastien H23 '2 Sheets to the Wind' Key West, FL
