Bottom Paint

I'm planning a bottom job on Overture. Does anyone know the sq. ft. of
the bottom or the number of gallons needed.

Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul. It's been awhile since I've painted the bottom. The boat has been
on the hard way to long. Fortunatley I have a fool proof memory. (I call her
Judy.) I thought it was a gallon but she says a gallon and a quart. I do
know a roller is faster but a brush spreads the paint better and you will
use less with a brush. Walt
P.S. My new trailer is almost done and I hope to bring Lyric from Mexico to
her new home in northern California this spring.

It takes me every bit of 1 1/2 gal of Micro CSC for 2 coats. When I polled
the group on this a few years ago, I got two responses:

Dave Vega #3233 wrote: 1 1/2Gal.I did it this spring with interlux.

Thomas D. Hamill wrote: "A book called "Sailor's Secrets" states the
following: "One gallon of most paints and varnishes will cover about 500
square feet. Antifouling covers less, about 300 square feet per gallon.
Estimate a boat's bottom area by multiplying length times beam times 0.90."
For a Vega that would be 27.0833 X 8.0833 X .9 = about 197 feet. Two coats
would require about 400 feet, so 1 1/2 gallons (450 feet) should leave an
adequate safety factor. I have no idea whether the formula is accurate :)"

Hi All

Don’t do gallons anymore here as your gallons seem different to ours!.
Most Vega owners here in the UK buy a 2.5 litre tin and this does the
two coats. Tried many different types and all seem to work to some
agree. Lats year I managed to get som Blakes Tiger Antifouling in Grey
which I will use this year (in the next month).

Just my two penneth.....

Don’t tell anyone but just spent three days sailing in The Solent in a
Westerly Centaur (A caravan with sails) and had a great time but really
wished I had my Vega at the same time....

This may have been hashed over before, but I need a refresher if it has.

I have an old, broken Force 10 Kerosene heater on the boat. They don't make
the kerosene model anymore and there seems to be fewer replacement parts
available. I will probably replace and not repair.

Lately I've seen some of the European heaters talked about such as Refleks
(seem totally expensive to me). I've also considered solid fuel such as a
Dickinson Newport -- cheap to purchase and pretty fool proof.

Just wondering what others are doing???

I recently purchased new jets and "pricker" plus a few gaskets from
Force 10 for my kerosene heater.
I contacted them by phone and talked with a very helpful lady who
fixed me up with the parts I needed.

Here is the contact info:

They still list the kerosene heater on their website at

A US gallon is about 3.8 litres, a Canadian gallon about 4.6 litres,
the same as the Brit gallon I think. So a US gallon and a half would
be almost 6 litres. Steve, you must be spreading that paint real thin!

Hello Paul,

I always need 2.5 liter (two and a half liters) and this is enough for two
layers.

Kind regards,

I painted this weekend using a 'furry' roller and used almost 2.5 liter for just one layer. Actual painting took about 2 hours (after 4 hours brushing, sanding and cleaning).

Hi Steve

You'll be pleased to know that Xiphion is now ready to be launched (Sat 1st
April). I only apply 1 coat of antifoul, then dry out and jet wash off just
before round the island race in June. I've never really had a fouling
problem with just 1 coat. Circa 1.5 litres. Boat is in from April to
October.

I discovered I had diesel bug last week - Have a feeling it must have been
fuel picked up in France. All cleaned out, new filters and additive added
etc now.

Anyway, the bung is in the keel (almost forgot this last year), engine's
serviced and run up, new standing rigging fitted, all polished and looking
quite good if I say so myself.

See you on the water

Tim

PS - To other South coast UK sailors - For the last few years there has been
a low turn out for the Briangee Vega Challenge Cup. This is the Vega class
for Round the Island race - Quite a big cup to go on the sideboard! Last
year there was only myself and one other vega, Sea Star, both from
Portchester Sailing Club - neither of us finished due to no wind, along with
hundreds of others - However, would it not be great to have a fleet of circa
7 - 10 boats? It could even double up to be a "rally" with drinks etc the
night before at the Folly.

Xiphion is already entered. Go to www.roundtheisland.org.uk to enter.

Happy sailing everyone

Tim

Gallons/Quarts/Litres - who cares; the Vega fulfills that most vital criteria for any yacht with regards to antifouling. "It's no bigger than the wife can cope with"

I did the same. but put two roller layers on with more paint. I
assume that one thick layer like this is similar to two of the thinner
painbrush applied layers.

However, I took ages scraping off the old layers and priming first.
It was all flaking off quite badly (along with parts of an old epoxy
layer) so it needed cleaning up. Probably did a little too much work,
looking back, but its all looking good now!

Dear Walt and Judy, did you say "new trailer?" I am trying to build one
out of a power boat trailer. Did you supply the dimensions for the pads
etc. or are you simply leaving that all up to the manufacturer? Thanks,

Hi Trevor,
We are letting them build it. They have done them for vegas in the past. I
did g to the handbook and download the lines for the boat. I sent it to them
as an additional reference. I think the biggest problem you will have is
the keel sit in a shoe that is lower than on a powerboat trailer.

I will try to post pictures of my trailer that I had custom built for my
Vega. I might not get around to it for a while and don't know if there is room
in the photos or files section. If someone wants me to email a photo or two
directly to them, please let me know.

There's lots of room in the photos section right now. The files section
is getting a little cramped, but I'll try to remedy that soon.
