We're going to need to have our bottom painted this fall and wonder what's the best paint to use. We currently have some blue colored paint but notice that everyone seems to be leaning toward a gold color when they redo. Suggestions? We're on Lake Michigan.

Try Interlux VC17m

I use VC 17 in Chicago and am quite pleased. Here's the info from the BoatUS catalog: Super smooth Teflon-based antifoulant can increase hull speed as much as 10%. Modest antifouling protection for fresh-water and low fouling saltwater. Protects from zebra mussels. No sanding between coats or seasons. Apply and launch on the same day. Apply with roller or electric airless sprayer on fiberglass, wood or metal.

Try to find out what type of paint you have on your hull from the previous owner or the yard that painted it. It could be VC-17 because VC comes in several colors but is a coppery metallic color when applied and changes color after its in the water. If you already have VC-17 then just power wash, let dry, wipe down and paint over. If you have something else on your hull then you will need to check the compatibility for overcoating, or else repaint using your existing paint.

VC17 very popular, BUT. . .

you should do some reading first. The link below is a start but pick up a West Marine catalog and some back issues of Practical Sailor. The teflon paints like VC17 might require starting with a clean bottom. Big job! The modified-epoxies will go over most anything but I would still sand down for a nice start. I am using Trinidad SR on Lake Erie. When I pulled last Fall the bottom was completely clean, hardly needed pressure washed. And I launched this Spring without doing anything. I expect I won't need anything next year either. It's smooth and fast as well. At least one pro agrees with me, find the Calypso article in Practical Sailor. They switched. Since I sand before painting I do not worry about buildup. But check with the experts on your dock.
