First time have bottom paint. Yard says 2 - 2 1/5 gallons for Interlux Ultra W/Biolux Blue
@ 298.00 per gallon? Said they don't "thin paint." Seems bit much?

This is one of those it depends. I paid about $660 for haul out, pressure wash, painting and paint last year. Is that included or is it just for the paint?

You also need to ask others in your area what paint works for that area.

I should have been more specific. It is a boat yard project. Almost impossible to compare boat yard
prices since they obviously would vary for great number of reasons. Primary question is two to
tow and half gallons reasonable to paint our bottoms? Invoice that came with my boat indicated
PO paid for one gallon for bottom job. Paint prices would vary as well based on local conditions and pricing.
Thanks again for any answers.

In the Bay Area, you can expect a yard to charge about $2000 to apply a couple of coats of Ultra to a 31' sailboat.

You want to put 2 coats on everywhere with a third on the high-wear areas (waterline and leading/trailing edges of the appendages. On your boat, this would typically be a couple of gallons.

Yeah, he cheaped-out. That's not enough paint to do a proper job.

We just did a DIY bottom job in Indiantown, Florida. It cost us $just under $600 for haul, pressure wash, blocking, 6 days in the work yard and relaunch. We shopped this around and had the restriction of needing to live on the boat while doing the work so that might lead to a slightly higher cost than you are being quoted for some of those services. That also did include a day of rental for their vacuum sander.

As far as paint, 2 gallons of Interlux Micron CSC will give you 3 coats over the entire boat and 3 more at the waterline. We apply thin coats with foam rollers and probably could have gotten another entire coat with what we left to do the stand locations and the keel bottom. Double check that price with the yard. Interlux Ultra is only $190 a gallon from Defender. So that is over $100 more per gallon for the paint from your yard.

We also raised the waterline 3 inches. As a general process we believe in using two coats of barrier coat as a primer for the bottom paint. We "hot coat" the first layer of bottom paint to the barrier coat.

Clyde, we just had ours done at San Francisco Boat Works. The invoice shows 1.75 gallons Petite Pro. That seems to be one of the favored non-ablative paints in the SF/Monterey Bay region. I wasn't able to be there for any of the work, but as far as I can tell they did a good job on that, and a bunch of other work we had them do. The yard came highly recommended by several folks I really respect.

I just hauled and repainted Polaris last month. Needed 2.5 gallons but used 3 of Micron 66 Blue. Price was like $340 per gallon. Plus, at the yards recommendation, I used .5 gal of epoxy/barrier paint to touch up a few spots that looked like they needed it. Grand total was $1700 and that was painting it myself. Had to buy all paint from the yard. Yard hauled, power-washed, sandblasted (just to etch the surface of the previous paint) and re-launch. But this is a every 3-year job for me...not yearly.

I paid for a bottom job once and it was $1400 for 2 gal of ACT. I was already hauled out and in storage so that was not included. Only reason I paid is because this yard would not allow owners to paint. Current yard allows it and it ends up costing about $250 for the same 2 gallons and about 4 hours (I do employ a professional keel and rudder painter, but it doesn't cost anything!) of time (tape, prep, one gallon for coat 1, wait , a little less than 1 gal for coat 2). The leftover gets used for the jack stand area when the boat gets lifted and I do extra coats at the waterline and on the leading edges. So, 2-2.5 gallons would probably be just fine, depending upon the paint.

In our area, two coats is more than enough to get through one season. Anam Cara was in for two seasons and the winter last year and when we hauled this year a quick power wash was all that was needed, so the ACT worked as advertised.
