I have a Hunter 25, just picked up bottom paint from WestMarine. The can says it's not compatible with some soft paints. Any thought on how to tell what kind of bottom paint is currently on my boat? Thanks for your help!

Cheers,
C

Kind of hard to tell without seeing/touching it. Fresh water boat? Does it rub off easily? What do other boats use at your marina?

It rubs off easily, and is in fresh water. Not sure what others use... I will have to ask around. Thank you for your help!

It could be VC17. It is very good for the Great Lakes. If you can verify and recoat it will save a lot of work and money.

If it rubs off easily, that sounds like an ablative paint. Not something you can apply VC-17 over. Is it soft and chalky? If so, it's ablative, and you need to remove it completely before applying VC-17, but you can apply most other ablative paints over it. VC-17 seems to be the popular standard here in the Great Lakes, but lots of people use ablative paints too. What did you pick up at WM?

West Marine Advisor has a good chart that shows bottom paint compatibility for just about any combination you can come up with.

Good tip Dalliance! I'm getting close to redoing my bottom and I have ablative paint. Was assuming a power wash before repainting with new ablative paint. Will follow this thread.
