I just bought a Pearson 26 and plan to paint the bottom and hull. How much paing should this take. Also any comments on spraying as opposed to roll and tip would be helpful.
Thanks

It depends on the paint and how you are going to apply it. Usually the most conservative method is rolling/brushing.

Find out which mfg paint you are going to purchase and then you can look up the coverage/application methods.

As a general rule of thumb, a typical gallon of bottom paint covers +/- 400 sq ft. Take the waterline length of your boat x the widest part of your beam and multiply by .85 to get an estimate of square footage of your underwater hull. My guess is that'll be around 200 sq ft so a gallon of paint would give you two coats. On a boat your size, I suggest using a 1/4" roller and you can probably paint the bottom in about an hour. Good luck with the new boat....

Up until the last bottom job I did, I was a big proponent of Trinidad. But the cost has gotten totally out of sight. Last time I used Super Ship bottom, which is a hard ablative. This stuff is pretty darn good. After two and a half years, it seems to be holding up and doing every bit as good as Trinidad, at half the price. I am fairly close to you as far as location goes, so I would think it would do pretty good there in Kemah.

Whatever you choose, check out Wholesale Marine before you buy. I paid about $100 less going thru them because of the sale they were having and the free shipping. Shop around but don't forget them. If you trailer, EasyPoxy does great underwater for limited times and it's hard. Just an idea. I used HydroCoat and it works well but I'm not using it for marine growth, just o look good going down the high way.

is'nt it toxic to spray paint bottoms out in the open?
sis
bottom paint is almost always applied with a roller, it's generally too thick to be able to spray, all questions of toxicity aside.

Boat painting

First the bottom: As a pearson 26 owner for the last 13 years: Its going to take more than 1/2 a gallon to do the bottom I use Donovan Marine Red Ablative Highly recommended by practical sailor. I use a brush. My bottom comes out pretty clean at the end of the season But, Im sailing in water a lot colder, I suggest 2 coats on the cast Iron keel. If any rust bleeds through you can treat it with pettit one part rust inhibitor. Next the topsides. As far as the hull goes I had my boat sprayed with allgrip last winter in a professional shop. It came out perfect, This is a costly job. As far as a do it yourself brushing on the topsides I dont have any experience.

In NY you need a permit to even legally open a can of bottom paint, that's why I stopped wintering in City Island. I wouldn't bother them, of they are doing bottom work in a marina on City Island, while the marina staff is there, I can all but assure you they are state certified. NY fines the marina big time for allowing someone without a permit apply bottom paint. I know of 2 marinas there fined over $40k as a result of bottom paint violations in the past. They are very afraid of the NY state EPA on City Island....

I guess you should inform the hundreds of boatyards that spray bottoms every single day.

I meant any DIY job, most of us don't have the sprayers capable of spraying that thick of paint. Most yards out here don't spray either. Too much overspray, not worth the risk to other boats. I only know of 2 yards in the area that I've heard they even allow it for that reason. Most storage contracts I've read prohibit any type of paint spraying.
