The previous owner of my sailboat painted the propeller with VC-17. I have read that propellers should not be painted with bottom paint and I am attempting to remove the paint. I have tried paint stripper but it doesnt work, it sands easily but I dont want to scratch the brass propeller. Any suggestions?

Sanding should be OK

I probably won't hurt to sand the VC17 off the Prop. Just polish it out after you get done. Start with 80 grit but don't get too agrressive with it, then go to 120 grit, then 220, to polish out the scratches, the down to 400 or so, then polish it out with polising compound. ap rop isn't all that big so it shouldnt take much time.

So Whats Wrong with Bottom Paint?

I guess that in ON you only get slime on the prop and shaft. Here in FL we get that as well as barnacles, worms and you name it. Bottom paint works for a while on the prop and shaft, then it wears off. Maybe VC17 is so slick that the prop can't dig into the water??? I don't think so... Bill

Denatured alcohol or acetone

Acetone is the more effective solvent but it dries very quickly and you need gloves. Alcohol is a little less effective (not much) but it evaporates much more slowly and is less of a health risk. Scrubbing with an toothbrush dipped periodically in a cup of alcohol should have all the VC17 off your prop in a few minutes. Peter H23 "Raven"

Remove It

VC 17 contains a high amount of copper which will cause a galvanic reaction with the prop, it was a mistake for the PO to paint it, so definitly remove it.

Underwater metals

This quote from the Interlux website concerning VC17M: "UNDERWATER METALS: Underwater metals must be primed to avoid contact with copper bottom paints. DO NOT USE ON ALUMINUM."
