Hello! Question: Have you used a bottom paint stripper such asWest Marines "Peel Away"? I would like to remove the years of bottom paint from my hull and this method seems to be a lot easier

Peal Away 1....

Hello Rick, I have used the Peal Away 1 paint stripper from Sherwin Williams Paint stores. Great stuff and cheaper than sandpaper and my time :)! It was recomended on another site and I sure was grateful someone turned me on to it! Hope you will try it, it will irratate your skin so were protection. Will not damage/hurt gelcoat! Hope this helps. Alan

Be careful

There is more than one type of peel-away. The hardware store stuff is not as strong as the Marine stuff. Do a Yahoo search and check out their webpage. They talk about this. Of course, the marine grade is more expensive. Personally, I have never used it. But everyone that I know says...yes, it works well...and it is messy. About bottom paints. Take the time to choose it wisely. I but on a multi-season ablative. This paint can spend a winter on the hard and get drops back in the water in the spring. The trick is that it is ablative. The paint slowly disolves away as it releases the chemicals. As long as there is paint on the bottom, you can be assured you are protected. I reduces the future paint removal projects quite a bit. Also, be careful when stacking bottom paints. If you used a modified epoxy paint, you would have to sand it down before putting on a coat of albative. Interlux has a useful guide on their websote about their paint compatibility. Good Luck! Craig PS: I used Interlix Micron CSC w/Biolux. The boat stayed in the water from May of 2001 to January of 2002 here in Buzzards Bay (Cape Cod). I pulled it out and the bottom was perfect. This stuff is well worth the extra cash. Best bottom paint I have used in years!

Peel Away

I just did my 25 and it worked great. Just watch to judge the correct time to scrape and be sure the paper covering in tight (I taped it together) so the product does not dry out. It is Messy!!! I also scrubbed with soap and water after and then applied a thin coat to non removed areas. When I was satisfied with the results, I used vinager to counter act the peel away and finished by using 202 and then a 80 grit sanding. Came out perfect. I can't imagine sanding that much boat. See before and after line on the photo. Ric
