Has anyone used the vc17 extra bottom paint by interlux? How much of my old bottom paint do I need to remove? I was hoping to just pressure wash and do some light sanding then roll on this vc17 over the old bottom paint,While the boat is on the trailer. With the vc17 I could do this every spring?

I did mine yesterday

That’s what I did on my 1986 23.5 yesterday. Last fall she got a good power wash, this spring light sanding and a fresh coat of VC17. I read a post here about using sawhorses under the transom to stabilize and was able to drop the bunks one at a time to paint everything. It took two quarts for one good coat. This was my first year so we’ll have to see how well I did. The previous owner used VC17 and I didn’t have any buildup in a freshwater lake. Good luck. Bob Miss Lisa

VC-17 is great but not over old paint

I’ve used VC-17 for years and it works great. Very easy to work with and super fast to dry. It states very clearly on the can that it is not to be applied over any old bottom paint. Just gel coat or barrier coat paint. If you put it on top of an old ablative paint you may be sorry when it comes off with the old paint. Once it’s done right you never have to sand again, just clean it with some water and a scotch brite pad, then tape off the water line, paint and launch. The paint dries in literally 15 minutes.

remove all old paint - consider barrior

My 2 cents. Consider coating the bottom with a blister barrier coat first. In my case, the previous owner had interlux micron csc - which I found to be a fine bottom coat. But in my search for speed, like you, I decided it was time for some VC17. I also decided I wanted to keep this boat for a long time. Since I was going to take it down to bare fiberglass anyway, why not put an anti blister barrier coat on and then the VC17. That is what I did. Maybe it is overkill in protected waters, but some boats, even at the LaCrosse Sailing club, where I sail, have experierenced blisters. It is more work and $ but if you plan to keep the boat, it may be worth it.
