Bottom Paint Needed During Long Haul Out?

Most bottom (anti fouling) paints lose efficacy when dry over a prolonged period.

What kind of bottom paint is on hte boat? If it is one of the "Ablative" types, you may be able to just powerwash the boattom to "re-activate" the paint for this season. Alternatively, a light scubbing with a very-fine grit "Scoth-Brite" Pad and water will also work supposedly.

However, if the paint is faded and "Flaking off", then it is time to re-paint with a compatible new paint. I would suggest powerwashing the bottom first (or as above, scrubbing with water and a scotch-brite pad, then once it is dry, Sand the whole bottom with 80 grit paper, wipe it down good, then apply the new paint. I would consult the paint manufacturer's web-sites for best info.

It sounds like your question is do you need to paint it now when you are still going to keep it on the hard for another year. If that's the question, the answer is no. Clean it up and paint it before re-launching. Not now.
