We recently bought a 1989 Catalin 22. We want to apply bottom paint that would be best for fresh water. Through our research we are not sure which bottom paints are best for fresh water. Can you help? We purchased the boat through an estate sale and have very little info on it's past. We have been told the boat was probably only in freshwater through out it's life. Thank you for your help in advance!

Never mind the paint...

Do you really need to paint the boat? Fresh water trailer sailors may not need paint, if the hull is in good condition. You could just give her a good coat of wax and clean her when you pull her out. If the hull is smooth, and you are dry sailing, consider wax on your freshwater boat! T

Many Use

Interlux VC-17, advantage fast to apply, launch in 30 minutes, easy touch up. Several locals are starting to use VC Offshore, very hard and long lasting. Can be burnished to very slick finish. It does have a longer cure time. If your going to slip the boat you might also want to start with a barrier coat. In the end you have to decide what you want to use, take a look at the link it should get you started. Ask what others are using at your local lake.

It's cold in Montana! It's cold over here.

I have sailed on the Columbia River, out of Colville Wa. for better than 10 years without bottom paint. The water temps and weather conditions are about the same as where you are in Montana. Very few of the sailboats or powerboats use bottom paint unless the boat is left in the water for multipule years without removal. If you paint then you get into the circle of maintanance on that paint. If you simply powerwash the bottom at the end of the season you will have no problem with growth. Ray
