Well worth it

It's what I used previous to the last bottom job. he last time I had it done I was talked into using another brand with the understanding it was equal to the Micron Extra. Well so far I'm not impressed with it and will most likely go back to the Micron. I used the boat quite a bit last summer and in spite of that the bottom slimed up pretty quick. Yes the lack of rain allowed the salinity on the Sassafras to increase last year, as the barnacles can attest to, but I still think it had something to do with the paint. Spend the money, you can't go wrong. If you use the boat on a regular basis you can get 3 years between bottom jobs. Mike

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Impressive

I barely got two years out of my cheap ablative paint. I have to go in once in a while to clean the bottom and knock the slime off. I may try Micron the next time I do mine if it is that good.

You have to use the boat

Just remember you have to use the boat. If it just sits in the slip it won't matter what you use. My personal experience has been in both salt and brackish water. In both locations I thought it held up very well and will go back to it the next time around.

Blue Water Bottom Paint

I had decent luck with Micron Extra on the Ches Bay last year. I did get slime when it sat for more than a week, but most of it came off underway. Next week I plan to paint Even Keel II with Blue Water Paints "COPPER SHIELD SCX 45 ABLATIVE - SLIME CONTROL XTRA" which is supposed to be comparable, but is only $128/gal with free shipping from the EBay seller "gailshop75". They've got other types of paint also. I had no trouble with the transaction. I'll try to remember to report on it later this year. Even Keel II Herrington Harbor North Maryland

Micron Extra

I use Micron Extra on the Upper Ches...... Typically it will last 3 years but I put it on as smooth as a babies-ass. Smooth bottom paint will allow any accumulated slime to easily released when sailing at speed (or much easier to scrub) AND seems to make it last longer - probably due to the reduced surface area and lack of 'roughness' as when applied with 'roller'. To keep the Micron smooth in the 2nd and 3rd years I apply a quart or two with a plastic trowel to fill in any 'roughness' that develops in the previous season. I have a contrasting 'base' color coat to let me know WHEN to apply new bottom paint.

I personally think

that paying more than $100 per gal for a bottom paint is, well, outrageous. I think it still possible (at least this season....) to find a good-enough performing annual+ bottom paint, suitable for the Chesapeake and tributaries, at under that price. I used to buy and love Interlux ACT ablative. Always got it for less than $100/gal. Then the "new and improved" ACT hit the shelves. The price nearly doubled and the performance stayed about the same or went down, according to "Practical Sailor." I bought and used West's CPP ablative last year for under $100 and it did just fine. I just bought it again for this season (and a gal for next season too) and it's on sale until March 23d at $99/gal. Good enough for me. BTW, West CPP is the same product as Petit Premium, also available at under $100/gal. I would also recommend the water-based Petit Hydrocoat ablative. It, too, is on sale at West for $99/gal.

Just checked the bottom...

this moring in preparation for spring madness. The boat has had Micron CSC on its bottom for at least the past ten years. Since I bought it three years ago that's what I've used too. Today's survey showed a few keel rust spots, but the CSC held up well again, and with some lite prep will be ready to have a new coat applied in short order. Mike, I didn't see any barnacles on the shaft or elsewhere where they attached themselves previously when the boat was wintered in the water in Baltimore the year before I bought it. None of the other boats up in North East that I looked at had any either. Salinity must not have gotten up that far last year. We do get slimed along the waterline after a couple of weeks of inactivity. You're right--ya gotta sail it to keep it's bottom clean! Warren, I was using CCP on my last boat when WM changed vendors and the next season's application pealed the old paint off in sheets when rolling the new coat on. I was told that there was a difference in the solvent used. First time I've ever used a paint roller to strip off old bottom paint! LOL!

Agree with Warren

I will be using the WM CCP again this year. Will use probably a gallon, don't need to do the whole bottom. Except for slime and very minor barnacles the paint has held up very well. First four years we used Micron CSC and haven't seen much if any drop off of performance.

Barnacles

Dan if the barnacles paasd you by consider yourself lucky. We keep the dinghy in the water all season and clean the bottom periodically. This past year the barnacles were the worst I've seen in some time. Considering how nice last summer was (read that as saying we had little rain) I'm not surprised the salinity levels rose. Think I'll paint the bottom this year. Mike

Bluewater Is great

I have been useing Blue Water Paints, "COPPER SHIELD SCX 45 ABLATIVE for years and never had a problem, love the stuff. I order it direct from Bluewater and it shows up UPS, no problem. It is a chunk of change cheaper than Interlux. This season I hope to be a test boat for a new eco friendly paint being developed, I will have 3 different paints on me, one is the Copper Shield SCX 65 I believe, we will see how that goes.
