Hello to all, I am trying decide whether to paint the bottom of the boat myself or get the yard to do it. They want $30.00 a ft for it. I would like to put Trinidad SR paint on it. How much paint would it take for this boat? Russell Traina 89 Cat 30 TRBS

No more than 2 gallons

Depending on how many coats, you could need up to 2 gal. I did my 36' this past spring, did one coat over last year's and used 1 & 1/2 gallons. Make sure the paint is well mixed and the bottom of your boat is clean. I did myself, not a bad job to do.

Time vs money

Just did my Cat 30. Once it's pressure washed (about 1/2 hr ) and taped (5 min) using mainly a roller takes about 35 - 40 minutes. It's fairly easy. I use less than 1 gallon of bottom paint. I think $700/hr is a bit steep but you may have a lot more money than me.

Bottom painting

I'm with Dan. No way would I pay $30 a foot to paint the bottom of my C30. Provided the bottom is in good shape and just needs a paint job, a good wash down, a simple taping job followed by a roller paint job with a 11/2" diameter firm roller 6" long and you'll have the job done in an hour at most. If you lived near me I'd jump at the job for a hundred bucks. Jim G.

Took me

about 5 hours for 2 coats. About 1 for prep, 1 for each coat and about 2 for drying (and lunch and a few beers) between coats. Took just under 2 gallons, leaving enough for the marina to do the areas covered by the jackstands when they launched it. I considered having the marina do it until they gave me the total price!!
