Bottom paint fairing primer?

I have some places on the bottom where the bottom paint has chipped off. I took a scraper and scraped back to where there is a good hold. I've feathered this back, but because there is several coats of bottom paint there is still a depression of a mm or two. I want to avoid stripping the bottom this year, maybe next year. I want to fill in the depression and fair to the level of the existing bottom paint. What primer/filler should I use? When I was a kid and did autobody work to put my self through college, we would feather the paint back, apply a filler primer, some red putty ( red putty is used to fill scratches ), then sand the red putty, and prime again several coats with filler primer, then sand smooth. This would bring the repaired area up to the level of the surrounding paint. I'm familiar with the concept, put need a suggestion on what filler primer to use under water with bottom paint. Thanks for any help, Steve

Interlux Watertite

This is a ready to use two-part epoxy filler with the consistency of peanut butter that sets up in about 4 hr and sands easily. It's a lot easier to use than West System or Interlux Epiglass because the filler is already mixed in. Of course, you'll have to sand the filler off when it's time to renew your bottom paint. If your current bottom paint is modifed epoxy then it's no big deal because you're going to have to sand anyway. If you have ablative paint, you'll still have to sand, but not as much as if you have all epoxy bottom paint. Watertite was about $30 a kit, and a little goes along way. Good luck. Not to be smart, but

why worry about a few of those dings? the fresh bottom paint will cover the bottom very well, and the dings can be dealt with when you remove the old bottom paint in the future. No one but you will ever know they are there! Good luck!

DOH!

Thanks for the tip, Peter. I should have asked when doing my bottom last week - would have come in handy. Sounds MUCH easier than West Systems. :-( LaDonna PS: My shoulder still hurts from grinding. :)
