Hello Sailors, I had bottom paint applied in the U.S.V.I April 2004, and put my boat(Hunter 450) on-the-hard in Trinidad 2 1/2 months later. It has now been out of the water 7 months. I am trying to determine if another coat of Petit Trinidad SR is needed, before dropping her back in the water. The boat yard is quoting a price for a full bottom job.

From what I read in west marine book ultima SR provides multi-season protection,even after winter storage,but trinidad SR does not the same. I had trinidad SR on my boat out of the water and before they relaunched they reapplied bottom paint. nick

Modified-epoxy.
I also use Trinidad SR. Modified-epoxies are not supposed to do well out of the water. But I have easily gone two seasons with six months out of the water. Big differences, I am in fresh water and the six months out are cold. I agree with Warren, call Petit. But even if required I would opt for a light sanding and one very light coat.

Unimpressed with Ultima $$$
After using both Trinidad and Ultima I'd go with Trinidad. Ultima in my opinion is overpriced and over rated. Trinidad SR did a better job reducing slime and lasted much longer

Bottom paint is NOT what you need to worry about! I stored my boat in Trinidad (Chag) for five seasons. Check out my web site for the damage. Trinidad is wet and hot. Both of those conditions will make your boat look like mine did. Many of us have learned the hard way. Cruising World ran an article a short time ago about Trinidads' cruising fleet dropping to less than half. Not good. People are leaving in droves. Where are you stored? I used Peakes, but it doesn't matter. The locals will say that you need to hire someone to 'look after' your boat so it doesn't suffer too much. The hired hand will keep the cockpit drains clean and make sure the power stays plugged in. Yea, right! Our hired hand threw parties on board. The yard (Peakes) threw her out. In my opinion, these people are looking to make money and are selling a bill of goods. They don't know what it takes to properly take care of yachts. The Pardeys said it best. Never leave your boat alone and stored. Have someone from the cruising fleet live aboard while you are away. Never close up your boat in the tropics. Wish I would have paid heed.

This obvious flood damage happened regularly during storage. The black stain is from hurricane Louise while stored on Antigua. That island is dry. What these photos don't convey is the SMELL. :{

Trinidad SR four years
I bought my boat four years ago in Melbourne, Fla. It had just been bottom painted with Trinidad. The paint has lasted four years, and has been dry stored in the winter. In the spring, I just lightly sand the bottom to remove oxidation, and the paint is as good as new, brought back to life with the light sanding. The beauty of hard paint, the quality of Trinidad. Infrequently a few minor touch ups are necessary, but overall no repainting for four years.

Hello Fred, My boat is at Caribbean Yachtworks (Crews Inn). They have been professional in handling a few issues that have happened. A theft from our boat cleaned out all our consumer electronics...laptop, TV, etc.etc., they were fair, after some negotiation. They also made changes in their Security Service while I was there. I had an air conditioner mounted in the companionway to (hopefully) control humidity inside. I flew back in September to deal with the theft, and everything looked OK. The Staff there has been good to work with. They are a business trying to make money, also, I think they strive at maintaining a first class yard. Anyway, That is my impression. Hopefully, no unpleasant surprises upon my return. Lordy, I can't wait to get going again! Too long out of water. Take it easy. Wayne s/v Novatrix
