We are getting the bottom on our 1999 Hunter 340 painted this fall. Any suggestions on good products to use? We sail mostly off Oriental, NC in the Pamlico Sound ... in between salt & fresh water. Mostly temperate climate. Thanks!

Check with the locals

Stuart: Check with the locals. Both marine yards and owners, they can tell you what works in your area. We are using one of the new SR (slime reduction) paints. When we traverse from the fresh to the salt water the hull looks like it is just painted. We are in the California Delta and go to the San Francisco bay once or twice a year.

just my thought for what it is worth but I like interlux micron csc. Would recommed a ablative type paint no matter what brand you chose

Your boat is almost new. Has it already been painted? I would reccomend a barrier coat, such as Interlux 2000, if hasn't already been applied. Make sure that all the factory mold release has been removed.

Practical Sailor does a nice bottom paint evaluation each year. Check the March issue. This year their top rated paint was Pettit Trinidad SR

I like Ablative

I had several years of built-up epoxy bottom paint let go and had to go through a pretty major scraping/sanding job to get it down to the gel coat. After that, I decided to go with the ablative type of paint (wears off as you go through the water). So far I like it fine. My boat has spent equal time in the Belhaven area (near you) and Annapolis and even though some of the recommendations were to stay away from ablative for a slow-moving sailboat that does not get used every week, I went with it and like it. I have used the Interlux Micron CSC, Petit ACP 50, and am now using the West Marine CPP brand. My preference is for the West Marine paint. Loaded with Cuprous Oxide, good price, and goes on well. Am on my second season with my last paint job and am leaning toward going for another -- never an option with the other paints. (I also agree that if you are down to the gel coat, a barrier coat is a good idea.) You'll get lots of different opinions about bottom paints. Bruce Catwalk (h34) bchase3@aol.com

Trinidad SR? Maybe...

but have to wait until haulout to know for sure. I took mine down to gel and did three coats of barrier(Interlux 2000). Then I put on two coats of Trinidad SR for two reasons. One, Practical Sailor said to. Two, in Lake Erie our main problem is green slime, very little else. So, while not anxious to pull her out in October, I would like to see the bottom. Maybe I'll go over the side this weekend and report back. Also like that the bottom is smooth and fast, compliments my folding prop. :)
