Has anyone had experience with changing bottom paint types on their boat?? I have vc offshore on it now and am considering going to an ablative type paint. Do i have to completely remove the vc off shore or can I scuff it and overcoat with an ablative paint.

Remove

Mike, In West Marines' catalog 2000, page 319, the answer is that a teflon paint should be removed before applying an ablative. Sorry but your sure don't want to do it twice. r.w.landau

Paint Change

My previous sailboat had VC 17 on it since I sailed on fresh water lake. When I moved the boat to Newburyport and salt water, I changed to ACP 50 anti-fouling paint. You do not have to completely remove old VC Offshore. I sanded it down pretty good, but not even close to completely removing it. Just give it a fairly good sanding, assuming the bottom paint is in pretty good condition to start with. It has worked beautifully for six years now. I touch up the water line every year before launching since that's where the paint really takes a beating. I do add a quick one coat every couple of years to keep it in perfect shape. Good luck. Can't say enough about ACP 50.

Wrong!!

Mike, I was wrong! I read the chart backwards. The chart says "sand well and apply". Sorry for the previous response. r.w.landau

Heavy sand

According to the latest Interlux paint guide if you want to apply an ablative (Micron CSC or Micron Extra) you should heavy sand the VC Offshore then apply the ablative. It is not necessary to remove the VC Offshore. I discussed this with the Interlux Representative at the boat show on 2/7/01 and that was his advice.
