My wife and I bought a 2004 22 MKII last year and have yet to get it into the water ( hectic work schedules). Things have finally calmed down and we are looking to get the boat bottom paint, mast raised, rigged and start lessons. We have secured a slip in Marina Del Rey. I received a $3700 quote for bottom paint, ouch!!! Is this reasonable for the area. We have a 14 foot Hobie Holder we've sailed for about 2 years. So our experience is limited. Any help please would be appreciated; suggestions, recommendations, I'm listening

What kind of bottom paint do you currently have? Are you on a trailer? have you considered mast up storage? No bottom paint, no monthly maintenance of bottom, launch in 15 minutes, monthly fees $140.

No, never thought about mast up storage. Didnt even know you could do it. Are you familiar with the area proposing? Yes the boat is currently on a trailer. I am going to look into it right now.

I think that price is far too high, even for the SoCal area. If it's on a trailer, paint it yourself if you have a place where you can. If not, tow it to a more reasonably priced yard. If that price included setting up the rigging, then there would be a lot of labor charges involved, most of which you can do yourself.

Also, having had boats in both mast up dry storage, and in a slip, I can say without a doubt that you will use the boat much more if it is in a slip.

I believe that mast up is run by the county correct? I called them and they quoted me a price but said they're doing "inventory" and won't know if they have vacancies until mid month. How do you like it? How is the boat ramp? By chance can you recommend a place that could rig my boat? Thank you in advance

It's been a while but we will be out this Saturday, if you're around. The wife and I are going to go out for a while. Probably going to stay in or close to the marina and work on some fundamentals. We won't need any additional crew but we'd love to see your boat.

Welcome to the MK-II family! GREAT boat, LOVE ours! Sounds like you finally got a decent price for bottom paint. Down here in San Diego 2 years ago cost me $800.

We were sorta up your way in San Pedro last month for our cruise to Catalina Island.

With hoops....Lobster season opens Oct 1 through April. You have to buy a fishing license, get a saltwater stamp, and but a lobster card. I think it was like $50 total last year, then you need to buy the hoops and gear. I'm waiting until after Jan 1st to buy my license, then I'll have until the end of the season, and come Oct, the beginning of the next season.

But, they're cheaper at Costco, where you can always get your limit!

Actually it begins tonight but you can't pull your hoops out until after 12 midnight. We will be going out after 4 on Saturday to set hoops. I will likely be sailing up until then. You can have 5 hoops per license and 10 hoops max per boat. If you go sailing at night you will see lit up buoys floating in the water. Mostly around the breakwater but also out in fish haven. There are plenty of YouTube videos on the subject. You can buy hoops at West Marine. They even have bait.
We will be meeting at the California Hatch Club SCCYA dock on Mindanao at 4 pm on Saturday.
