I am having Good News hauled next week to have the bottom cleaned and painted, but am wondering about all those other things that might need checking. On my "to do" list is a broken thru hull (it broke closed, and is not a major problem), a non-functioning hour meter on my Yanmar, and a few other items. But the bottom is the primary need, and I am leery of giving a yard a blank check to start on other stuff. Any advice for a reasonable approach, specifically anything that needs to be hauled to be checked?? It's complicated because I have limited time available due to a need to leave town within a few days. The yard wants 5-7 days work time in exchange for a very reasonable price. Any suggestions of other things I should make sure get looked at? Sanders

Hangin' H37C?

Check the strut and cutless bearing Sanders. So long as the prop will come off they can install a new bearing without removing the shaft. The strut should be solid and "unbent". Which thru-hull is being replaced? This is an opportunity to "right-size" it so that you can use a true seacock. Might want to do them all. Do you need any knew ones like for A/C or a watercooled refer? Clean stuff: the prop, the speed log, the waterline, thru-hulls. Check the rudder where the stock enters at the top. Seal with epoxy if you see a separation. Any cracks around the keel to hull seam? Grind it out and fill with 5200. Stuffing box OK? Good time to repack if you do not have the dripless system. I use the GFO stuff(Related Link). You can adjust for no(zero) drips. What paint will they use? I envy you having the yard paint the bottom. Aren't you glad you asked? $$$$$>>>>

Haul

When ever I hualed Feng Shui (our old hunter 335), -the zincs were changed whether or not they we just replaced. -Repack the the propshaft seals -check propshaft cutlass bearing -examine propshaft to ensure it is straight -examine prop to be assure it is properly attached -grease all seacocks, examine for problems. Work on items that need have the boat out of the water. Make sure that if the yard runs over the allotted time you are no charged or you agree to the charges. If the boat sits with no work being done make sure you are not charged for the time out. I have seen boats in the Bay get hauled for what they thought was 4-5 days and end up for 2 weeks. In our yard the daily cost was about $100 for a 35 ft monohual. Can run into big bucks!
