I am deciding to purchase a 1986 28.5 Hunter as my first sailboat. The bottom will need recoating. What cost am I looking at to teflon coat the bottom? The compass is fogged to the point that one cannot read the numbers. Is there a way to polish it to a clear finish again?

replace the compass

Use Pettit Trinadad on the bottom and replace the compass. And get ready to spend money.

Not sure what kind of water or how long your boat will stay in it. I use Trinidad SR(Petit) because it is hard, fast, works well, and lasts. I can get two to three seasons even though the boat is out of the water five months a year(they claim modified-epoxies should stay in the water). This is in Lake Erie but I have heard good reports from salt water friends. It will probably take two gallons for your 28.5 at around $150. a gallon on sale. But whether you use VC-17 or any other paint you need to know what is already on the bottom. Then you need to go to the Interlux site and see what is compatible.
