Just having fun with vessels. My neighbor has a vessel that has continuously had blister issues. Unfortunitely, and ultimately it has to do with hydrolysis of the polyseter resin in the gelcoat and laminate. This is the fourth time the issues have occured. I informed him that I would put a post on my site to obtain any suggestion what to do about this on-going problem. He's already pulled her out of the water and plans on working on her after the winter...any ideas or suggestions of deterrent to stop or at least slow this process. I myself have only dealt with one issue on my old vessel and one only. I had the bottom completely redone as in new paint, new gelcoat...but this issue with my neighbors vessel is non-stop.

did your neighbor use a barrier coat epoxy after he did his blister work??? has he already tried hulltek?? the3 peel and redo hill blister stripper?? those 2 solutions work.
hultek is expensive, barrier coat is not nearly as bad. i would try th e epoxy barrier coat first.

Zeehag,
I am pretty sure he used the barrier coat epoxy. I am guessing it was not applied correctly...hullteck, I do not believe so, I will check with my neighbor, he is planning on taking her out after the present cold spell. I know i am not working on any vessel in the damn cold...that would cost if so! LOLOLOL
He just can not do half-ass paint jobs and expect things to work, ive told him...but you know how some only listen to so much. Plus, I can not say much, its not my vessel. I can help and give advice, how he uses that advice, well...
Thank you kindly for your advice, I will be sure to follow up with him and see whats/what...

I think the source of the problem may be that the hull was never allowed to sufficiently dry out before the application of new barrier coat & paint. I had horrible blisters on my last 36, a 1986 model. I sailed it up to Oxnard to Frank Butler's yard where they gave me a bit of a discount (the boat was only a few years old at the time). After peeling the gelcoat, the yard manager insisted on air-drying the hull insisting that the "tent & heater" method would not last. The boat was there for weeks. You might ask your neighbor what kind of drying regimen he has followed. If there is moisture in the hull, the blisters will always return as the moisture seeks a way out.

Ready for this one

Zeehag,
Your not going to believe this one___ he used Interlux 2000 (multiple coats of course), but last time he painted it..."he says" he can not remember the other times, he forgot to put the base coat of the Interlux 1000:naughty: They noticed that when they were stipping the old paint off. I am telling you, I feel bad for the boat. He lets it air dry- when he does this, he does not rush...or maybe he should, it might work out better! I told him to rethink his sailing and turn to a power boater " jokingly of course" :Liar:. Just unreal. After that, I do not get too involved, want no part of his project since then. If he forgets something else, it is on him. Thanks for the information.
