Never dealt with bosum chair. I have an H306 and occassionally would like to access above without having to deal with boatyard. Is the rigging sturdy enough to support that on a boat this size? boat stable enough on calm day?

Bosun Chair

If the halyards are in good shape absolutly. Just remember if you are useing a snap shackel on your halyard be sure its fully closed and taped shut. Also you should have two helpers, one to crank the winch and one to tail. Ray T

Not that big of a deal.

Roger: It is really not that big of a deal going up the stick. If you check the specs on your line, you will see that it is quite adequate to support your weight. I personally like a climbing harness better than the chair, but everyone has an opinion. It is alway a wise idea to go up the stick with a safety line. Regardless of the strength of the line you never know what could go wrong. The key is getting a setup so you can climb the mast yourself or have some strong crew members or harbor apes to crank you up there.

No No No!!!

Never EVER use a snap shackle to hoist anyone aloft. Tie a bowline knot into the harness and then you can snap the shackle to get the end out of the way.

Never trust your life to a snap shackle. Also it is a good idea to take a line up with you that is attached to a bucket on deck. That way you don't have to come down to get that tool that you thought you would not need.

Use the spinnaker halyard as your second or safety line. As you crank up the main halyard, take up the slack on the spin line -- just in case. The key to the bosun ride is to position yourself (a-hem) correctly to ensure comfort for the 30 or 40 minutes you're up there. Done correctly the bosun chair is safer than climbing a ladder to fix the gutters. More men get hurt that way, for sure.
