If money was no option and you could do it all over again what kind of boat would you buy? Would it be a Friendship 40, a 63' Alden , a little trailer sailer or would it be that little Sunfish you've seen for sale at the yacht club. There's no wrong answer and to you northern guys and gals mabe it will help keep you going through the winter . You might just wind up with a different boat for the new season.

I got it

f money were no object I would take the boat I have now and take it to a yard like Direktors and tell them to make my boat like new. I am really happy with my Nassau 34.

The Director 48 is a beauty - a real classic. Boats like the MF are impressive to see, but I would not want a boat like that. Too many places that will be inaccessible. You would never find that quiet secluded anchorage with that boat. You gotta have a crew aboard and I would not want all those people around all the time. I like the solitude or the company of my wife and/or a few friends. I don't like people waiting on me and fussing over me. I want to be left alone - I'll get my own beer, thank you. With a boat like that, what is the satisfaction of completing a passage? Who couldn't hire a crew and sail anywhere with that boat? Big deal. I guess I would make a lousy billionaire, but I sure can be a pissant on other people's dreams, can't I.

Time to Travel

Time to use a boat is more important than the boat that you use!!!! I would want a boat that did not require crew and was large enough to cross oceans. Maybe a Pacific Seacraft 37. But even with unlimited money I'd want something less than 40'. With unlimited money a custom job ..hire Robert Perry and sit down and design the perfect boat for me and my desires. Maybe start with a Tayana 37 and then modifiy it until it is perfect for me. Then time!!!! Most of the time my boat is tied up to the dock and I am either at work or sleeping. A much better life would be me waking up almost every morning with a island just below the horizon. Some mornings it is at the stern of my boat and others it is off the bow. At least once a month it is a new island. Maybe once a week.

Easy answer for me...

Rhodes Bounty 2. a 41 footer of classic design. Obviously, I like the older boats.

Bow Sprits look Nice

I don't care too much for Bow sprits. My boat has a small one and I hang the anchor there. A newby snagged my anchor and tore off his stern rail!!!! No apparent damage to my boat. A long bow sprit in a crowded marina just seems like trouble. But the BCC does look good!!!!

Kinda like Higgs

I'm kinda like Higgs on this one. After long and thoughtful consideration, I would more than likely keep what I got. The Seidelman 37 suits me just fine, will take my anywhere I want to go, and I am able to sail her by my lonesome. If money was no object, would probably do a lot of upgrades, all new electronics, but see no reason to buy bigger, or newer.

Like what we have just fine

(C34) but a C42 wouldn't hurt, right Bob? :) Like any other choice about boats, it should be about how you are planning to use it. A Hans Christian or Tayana in the 35 to 42 range would be nice, but I don't see myself sailing over the horizon one way. Subject to change... For coasting and going down the coast and sailing around here our C34 is just fine. A friend just recently completed a trip to Southern California in one, and many others have done so. Some who've done it also say that a C42 would have been more comfortable. So instead of a new boat, I'd just ask Santa for new engine mounts (installed of course :)).

North of 49 degrees

Those Nauticat PilotHouse sailboats (not motorsailors) look like the answer in these northern climes as they could extend sailing season considerably.

Or perhaps just a Swan that is not too big.

Not too big to day sail with a few hands but not too small to take you here and there. Of course she would be rigged with all the latest and greatest navtronics and a sextant and charts. It would be great to have a top of the line tender as well. Dream on.

What do you look for in the ultimate boat???

More berths?? A better stereo system?? Water Tanks, less draft ,more draft??? In your minds eye are you looking for a boat that can survive a 360 degree roll or one that has air conditioning and a large cockpit for entertaining??? I tend to dream about a boat that can round capes safely. But drinking rum in a large cockpit full of bikinis doesn't sound bad either. In short when buying a boat is seaworhiness the top priority, speed or is it comfort?? Of course we all want an extremely fast ,very comforable and seaworthy boat.

Upgrade

Having unlimited funds to buy a boat doesn't really change much for me; my wife and kids still don't want to go sailing for a week. Its a big deal for the wife and I to do an overnight, and my son just doesn't like sailing at all (motorboats, however, are fine for him). Almost all of my sailing are daysails on the weekend or solo jaunts after work. My 1979 Oday 23 is perfectly suited to that kind of sailing. Still, having an unlimited budget to buy a new boat would be great. For me, I would buy the ultimate small daysailer/overnighter: an Alerion 28. If I am really dreaming though, my family would all of a sudden want to go cruising, and I would be forced to choose between a classic beauty like the Pearson Vanguard or the Swiftsure and a new Catalina 330 or 350.

Mike's (above) sounds just like my story.

I love my O222 now. I enjoy maintaining it in beautiful condition. I work to pay for it more than I can use it. My next 28-30 footer will be my dream boat and I can do the same with it. Will it be the last? Who knows. More time to sail would be great but my dream above all is good health and happiness for me and my family. What fun would all that money and a dream boat be without them.

My faith restored

Happiness is satisfaction with where one is. It is so nice to see most responders are pretty close to where they want to be. I thought I was a weirdo being satisfied with my boat.

Love my mac 25... but...

I love my Mac 25... it really does everything that I need it to do for an inland lake boat... just wish it had about six-inches more head room down below, throughout the entire cabin!
