The boat I have purchased has some abrasions on the blue boot stripe that have gone through the color but do not qualify as a scrape or scratch on the surface which needs filling. I basically want to "repaint" the effected areas. I have secured the gelcoat from Hunter Marine but need some "know-how" advice. Everything I read is aimed more to fiberglass repair, where you need to fill gouges, etc. What prep is needed to add a layer of gelcoat for coloring purposes to the existing boot stripe. I know to clean with acetone and to use styrene to help re-activate to old gelcoat. Do I sand the old surface? Do I roll, spray, brush the new color on? After application and covering with plastic for drying, do I wet sand with 1200 grit or just compound and wax. Any other advice will be appreciated.

I did my boot stripe last year with great results. I masked the area off first and lightly sanded the stripe. Cleaned the area with acetone. I used a 2 part epoxy paint. Here is the key given to me by a guy that does this for a living. I rolled on the 2 part paint with a small roller. Have someone follow you with a GOOD quality brish to eliminate the small bubbles. It comes out glass smooth.

Thanks for the reply - turns out the boot stripe is a painted on stripe. Next year I will re-paint it.
