I need advice on what brand and color would be the closest match for my boot stripe on my Catalina 30 1983 vintage. I have painted it 2 years ago, but could not find the proper BROWN color. I also am having difficulty in making the paint adhere. I intend to use a heat gun with minor scraping to remove my paint so I can try again.

Use vinyl TAPE
You can buy vinyl tape in a plethora of colors and widths, probably including brown. I used Vinyl tape for the boot stripe on my '73 Cal 27 in about '90, and it's still on the boat (starting to look a little ratty, but I don't own the boat any more, so I don't get a vote!). I had tried a topside enamel before I used the tape, and it didn't stick to the AwlGrip that the PO had used to cover the old faded red gelcoat Power boaters use this vinll tape all the time, it's fairly easy to install, and if it comes off, it's easy to completely remove and replace or to patch. ...do you have a supplier of various colors in 2" tape? WM has the light blue I want in a 3" for $45, insane when the 1" is on $15... they are pricing by thw width and multiplying. It's got to be out there cheaper, but I havn't found it yet! I want to replace the cabin stripe on my H 23. Thanks!!

This worked well for me...
On my old boat I used Pettit Boot Strip - Black Sanded the area with 100 grit, cleaned with acetone and painted with a foam brush. Two coats and it was great ever since. I like black because it doesn't show the dirt or grime and it doesn't show the oil and polution from the water on the Miami river.

Thanks to all your responses. I want to keep the look as original as possible. The flair in the stern would make the tape very difficult as the stripes gets very wide there. I like the idea of the Sherman-Williams. Thank you all.
