I solo alot,1991 Hunter 28, and I'm cosidering purchasing a boomkicker so I won't have to leave the cockpit and adjust the topping lift - any ideas?

rigid boom vang

A rigid boom vang will give the same support and provided a vang too. I am installing one on my 33 now. In looking at other rigid boom vangs in the marina it appears that the toping lift on all boats is attached for additional support while at the slip. Take a look at your marina and see what others have done. I found a number of rigid boom vangs but not one boom kicker in my quick survey.

Compare

Compare the Boomkicker with the Garhauer Rigid vang. Think you will like the Garhauer better and the price difference in minimal.

Boom Kicker

Either one is a huge improvement over a topping lift. I have a Boom Kicker that I'm very happy with. They have a 1-800 number and they are very easy to talk to.

was to add a Boomkicker to my boat. The more I can do in the cockpit, the happier I am. Don't have to worry about dropping the boom on the bimini.

I went with a Boom Kicker.

Saw it in a WM add. Solved all problems for us. Picked up the phone and ordered it right away, from Sailnet! Saved 33%. Works good too. I would caution you Ron, on Paul's dockside survey. Rigid Vang's have been around many years, Boomkickers are new and a lot less money. Disadvantage: When you lean on them for support, they give. Don't do that. Advantage: When you lean on them for support, they give. The boom won't get wrecked accidentally.

Solid vangs are not made to make dropping your sails easier. Their job is to help shape the main under sail. The fact that you can drop the main without having the boom hit the deck is just an extra. Also, if you have a topping lift, it should be removed from the end of your boom while under sail. How many times I've seen boats that are unable to sheet in because the damn topping lift is still attached.
