Hi, Just bought a new to me 87 Hunter 23. We put up the mast and found that there is nothing attaching the boom to the traveler. Should I purchase a boom vang or doe's something else go there. If I need a boom vang, what size should I get and should it have a preventer. Thanks Wally

Wally, I too bought a 1987 HUnter 23 in April. You should have a main sheet set up connecting the boom to the traveler. A boom vang would connect the boom to the mast. Brian

Found It
I looked in a bag of ropes amd odds and ends and found exactly what I needed.I put the boat in the water a few days ago and I'm still riging it. Another question, will a 4hp motor be ok for this boat or should I go with a 5 or 6 ? Someone stole the 7.5 hp motor that came with the boat last night. I like the 4 HP because it has a built in gas tank.Also should I get a long shaft model ? Brian thanks for your reply. WALLY

Well, there are a lot of people out there with a lot more experience than me with this boat since I have only had mine out once. But for what its worth, I have a 5hp and I think that would be the minimum. But it depends on the conditions you would be using the boat in. If I was trying to get back to my harbor in 5 ft. swells and 20knts of head wind I would want as much hp as I could get. I don't think 4hp would be enough in the conditions I sail in. Brian

Mine came with a 9.8 even though the orginal motor mount was tearing itself out of the transom. I belive hunter says 6hp is all we need. But! I'm on the Delaware river and the tide's current runs 5-7 knots so the extra hp is welcome. Darn shame your 7.5 was stolen. Long shaft is best. Consider getting a fold up motor mount and reinforcing the transom too. You really want the motor out of the water when sailing. welcome to the forum Wally! Denise

Rule of thumb is 2 h.p. per 1,000 pounds of displacement. Check the stats on your boat and plan according to your environment - Denise is in a well-known tough spot (Delaware River, I think). If you are on a lake in NH you won't need that much. Good luck - and put a sliding padlock through the screw nuts on your new outboard - that will keep the "honest thieves" at bay.

Extra long shaft...
If you can find an extra long (25") shaft, you might want to consider it. I have a 5hp long shaft Mercury on my h23 on a Gauhaurer bracket. It just doesn't get deep enough to suit me. It is fine if I'm in the cockpit or have company but if I'm single handling her the intake bobs out of the water and sucks air if I go to the bow while it is running. It even bobs once in a while while I'm on the cabin roof hoisting the main. I probably should run the halyards to the cockpit... Probably wouldn't be an issue then.
