Hey all, I am new to sailing and my H22 is my first boat. I have a question concerning a boom vang. I purchased my boat from the yard so it was not rigged and I have never seen one set up so I am learning by reading and looking at as many pictures as I can on this site. Question: I purchased a Boom Kicker from the Chandlery and a new main sheet vang but I do not have a boom vang. Do I need one? I realize it keeps the boom from lifting but does the main sheet do that as well? Just curious if anyone can provide any help. All I have is a cleat on the bottom of the boom so I am not sure where it would attach. Hunter sent me the manual to this boat but I simply can not tell from the pictures and it says nothing concerning rigging. Thanks! Matt

A vang is not *required* right now but . .

you should plan on adding one. It attaches between a bail on the boom and the base of the mast. The bail is a U shaped fitting that attaches to the boom about 2 - 2.5 feet from the gooseneck. There should be plenty of pictures at West Marine or Harken that shows how they are arranged. Their benefit is to allow flattening the main even when you have the boom let out on a reach or run.

Bails

Thanks Clark, That answers my question about "why" a boom vang. Would this just be a smaller version of my main sheet set up? (smaller line size and block size) If I do not currently have a bail on the (mast end) of my boom is it safe to say the owner before me did not use one? I guess I would have to drill a hole in the boom and the base of mast to add the bails?

Check this link out . . .

This is from Harken. Also, check West Marine; they show some examples and also have bails if your boom doees not have one (??!)

If your boom does not have a bail then Yes . .

You'll have to attach the bail to the boom with screws on each side of the boom. You'll also need a fitting for the base of the mast. The vang system is very similar to your main sheet system. I can take pictures of my old 22 this weekend if you can wait. Shoot me an email and I'll send them Sunday

Wichita?

Matt: Did you join Cheney or Eldorado? I'm at eldorado, but crew with friends at Cheney. If you need any help let me know - I could hook you up with people at either club. We also have sailing classes coming up at Eldorado, Cheney also offers these. Ed at Action Marine (Andover) is a Hunter dealer, and would also be helpful. FYI: I've got pictures in the photo forum, Hunter 26.5. I taught my wife to sail this way!!!! Let me know if you need help...

NSA

Thanks! I am a member of the NSA at Cheney... very excited. I have met a few of the members at the club already while working on my boat in the yard and everyone has been very helpful. I plan to take the Red Cross class at the lake in May. I have been down and visted with Ed and he has recently converted to Catalina dealer only but has been very helpful with all my questions! I have got so much to learn. I'll take a look at your pics on the photo forum.

Matt, did you get my pictures?

Hope they weren't too big and that they helped.
