I will installing a rope boom vang on my '81 30 shortly, but I'm a little concerned about where to attach at the bottom of the mast (deck stepped)i.e. how high off the deck should the holes be drilled, etc. and how far out on the boom should the bail be. I would love to see some pics of other rope vangs on 30's or the measurements. Thanks

Do not have one on my boat

Thought about putting one on but had conflicting answers that one is not required for Bay sailing. Please advise if it makes any performance difference. Thanks Ian McGain imcgain@griffinmail.com

Rope vang.

Very helpful for downwind sail shape on most boats. But it is hard to get the leverage on the older Hunters. On my H37C the vang attaches to an eyebolt on the deck. The eyebolt replaces one of the bolts that goes through the deck to secure the mast partners. On the boom there is a tang about four feet from the mast. So that is a very shallow triangle. Even with the vang I have added an adjustable topping lift to take up the slack. And that is with the mainsheet at the end of the boom. I probably get more value from it as a preventer than as a vang.

we did it

I just put one on a h30. i drilled thru the mast about 2" about the step and thru the boom about thirty inches from the goose neck. Its at a right angle. the vang 4 part works ok and can be snapped to the toe rail for a preventer or one a reach. works great for that. easy project if you use bails and bolts. we put it nylon shims to prevent the bails from working on the paint. dont have any pics.

vang same as Ed's

My 30 Hunter is set the same as Ed's although I do like the idea of a nylon shim washer to save the wear on the anodized boom and mast. I also use a 4 part purchase with a snap shackle to use as a preventor to the rail when I fly the spinnaker
