Mike: Look at the Garhauer Rigid vangs. I think that they are under $300 for your boat. They are all stainless and come with a 10 yr. warranty.

I just ordered a rigid boom vang from Garhauer http://www.garhauermarine.com/ for my Hunter 30, $230 plus shipping. Each one is custom made for mast, boom and boom height. I used lead solder wire to wrap around the mast & boom then transfered to paper and faxed them a copy. Now I'm waiting for delivery. Mike Layman Corpus Christi, Texas

Rigid or Traditional?

Mike You do not specify which type of vang you are interested in.If you mean a soft vang almost any would do.You could even make one up yourself out of suitable blocks and line.If you can afford it rigid vangs are the way to go.Garhauer's is excellent, all their products are bulletproof and relative bargains. They will make sure you are satisfied(no I do not work for them, just impressed with there products).Practical Sailor also always rates them highly.Good luck!

Garhauer Web site

I checked with Garhauer earlier in the season to see if their product would work on my H33. I was told that the distance between the bottom of the mast and the boom had to be something like 33 inches. The boom on my H33 doesn't even come close to that so I didn't buy one. They have a nice Web page at http://www.garhauermarine.com/ but I don't see the specs, only the photo. You might try calling them for the full information. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

Solid boom vang

I installed a Garhauer solid boom vang on my 1983 H 33 this spring. My 33 has the Kenyon mast which sits on a large black aluminum pulpit / sheave base. The lower mount originaly supplied, which was intended to go on the mast itself would have ended up at least a foot above the deck, making the angle to the boom too sharp. I had Garhauer make up a lower mount to my design which mounts to a welded in rib on the aluminum mast pulpit and makes the mounting angle acceptable. I've used the vang without incedent all season and aside from superficial surface rust staining it's great, especialy for the price compared to everything else I see out there; $230 as I recall, as opposed to other stuff starting out at about $600,. One note: I saw a 1981 H 33 which had the same pulpit exceept it lacked the rib I used for mounting. I'm sure Garhauer didn't keep a copy of my design, but I think I can find the sketch I sent to them. I know it cam be made up for the pulpit without the rib if that's what you have.
