Boom Vang rigging

I have a 1993 Hunter 23.5 that I am rigging completely for the first time and I am apparently missing some shackles to set up the boom vang. I believe it's original, a Schaeffer and according to to the manual it connects to the mast pin and the eyelet on the bottom of the boom? Looking for some guidance. The previous owner had it short period and never used it and is of little help.

Hi Chris,
There is supposed to be a flat SS shackle that you slide the pin through as you're setting the mast on its base. This is then joined by another shackle to the lower vang blocks. http://www.usspars.com/wp-content/uploads/PartPics/561.jpg .This is listed as rigid vang toggle but its what I have on my 23.5 to connect to the schaefer block, via u-shackle. Also, this is listed for the Z 160 spar whereas you should have the Z 190 7/8 version. Still it works for my 23.5. Go to US spars web page and select Hunter 23.5 from the drop boxes and then click on the line " Conventional Section Number Z190".

If you do not have that flat shackle, you can buy one as mentioned, or simply loop a length of dyneema around the pin a few times and tie the ends together securely. Attach the vang shackle to that.

I found the SS shackle at US Spar, thanks! My Shaefer block has no shackles as to connect to the boom or to the SS shackle. What do you recommend and does US Spar have those as well or WestMarine maybe? It's hard to do this online so I need some guidance.

Chris,
The bottom shackle I never remove, it stays on the vang and attaches when I slide the pin through the the flat shackle and mast step. the top shackle I unscrew and capture the loop in the boom for the vang attachment.

On my 23 I also lack that flat piece that slides over the mast pin. But I simply use a soft shackle, similar to what Jackdaw suggested. I don't even bother with Dyneema - just 1/8 or so nylon, several loops to minimize stretch. I find it a pain to position the pin while raising the mast and don't want to bother with also positioning that metal piece.
