Boom Vang Question.

In attempting to flatten out our mainsail we are considering a boom vang. My questions is this: On our boat the traveler sits at the forward end of the cockpit, and the main sheet attaches to the boom about midway along its length. How effective would a boom vang be? Thanx in advance, Gary Guisinger

Cant hurt

I'm considering putting on a vang as well. It will probably be of the best use when running wing&wing.

Vang is good off the wind

It helps to hold the boom and keep it f rom rising so you present maximum sail area to the wind. Off the wind, the mainsheet is eased and doesn't pull down as much as when you are going to weather. You can also use the vang to control the twist of the mainsail when reaching or going to weather in heavy air, but that's a whole nother story... Peter S/V Raven

Boom Vang

The vang is a good idea. It will help keep your sail shape no matter how the main sheet is set. I have sailed with and without and much prefer sailing with. Mike S/V Sail La Vie

Mounting?

I would be interested to hear ideas for mounting a vang to the mast. I just installed a book kicker to eliminate the topping lift and as soon as the vang I ordered arrives I will need to install it. One thing to note is the boom is relatively low to the coachroof on the 22 so in order to get the correct angle on the vang it doesn't reach very far out on the boom. I guess I am going to have to find a happy medium. I don't want to overload the vang or mast fittings. I am using a vang with snap shackles so I can also use it as a preventer on long downwinds.
