I was given a boom vang for Christmas, but no hardware. I know to use a bale on the boom, but can I use a bale on the mast? What formula should I use to determine where on the boom the bale should go? Thanks Red Oktober

45 degree right triangle

Yo "Red"? Form 45-degree right triangle if possible. It is the most efficient. The distance from Mast bale to gooseneck equals distance from gooseneck to boom bail. Greg

Check with the mfg

I'd check with the manufacturer. The specs for our Garhauer is not equal distance.

Boom Vang

Usually a boom vang configuration has snap shackles at each end. The upper attaches to a boom bail, the lower by the foot of the mast. If your mast base does not have an appropriate fitting already installed, you have several options. Some people mount a padeye to the mast, others bolt one through the deck near the mast base, etc. The 45-angle is technically the most efficient as pointed out, but not an absolute requirement depending on boom height, mainsheet configuration, personal preference, and so on.

Doing that now!!

I have the same problem, but there is an easy fix. The way mine was hooked up is a bail at the aft pin for the mast hinge. The new way is a mast plate from Dwyer Masts. They sell a plate that will go under the mast hinge that has a spot for the boom vang. I have already ordered it should be here this week. If you need ther Phone number let me know. It also has spots to run more stuff aft. Cliff
