Not necessary Scott. The vang position on the boom needs to have leverage which can only be achieved by moving the bail as far aft as possible, up to 1/3 the distance (after that leverage decreases), the need for the lines clear dodgers, and the ability to leverage the boom by using sufficient vang purchase. It's not an exact science, since there are many variables. The key is how much leverage can be applied given the purchase set-up, attachment points and the sailor's effort to make vang adjustments.
