boom traveler placement

I have a 1977 C30 TR. The traveler runs across the tansom which makes the stern seat difficult to use (that thing is relly warm on bare legs). I have looked at the cabin top rig for early 80s boats of this size and am contemplating moving the traveler and tackle to the cabin top. I have access to the woodworking skills necessary to do it I am wondering about the sailing impacts. Has anyone done this? Is there any negative impact on functionality or sail shape? Any wisdom on this subject is welcome.

CabinTop Traveler

Mark; Moving the traveler to the cabin top will reduce the power of the mainsheet by about half, even with extra blocks, but when safety and convience, especially with wife/kids is factored in, it's worth it. For what is worth, I used to stand up, grab the end of the boom in one hand, pull it in, and take up slack in the sheet/traveler with the other. Worked pretty well and is even faster and more effective with crew.

look at garhauer marine

Check out this website. Garhauer has a complete upgrade kit to go to the flat mid-boom traveler. It is a great system.

Tiller?

You didn't say, but I'm assuming that your boat is tiller steered. There should be quite a few postings in the archives about converting C-27s from end boom sheeting to midboom sheeting. In terms of quickness and control, your existing set up is the most efficient. The cabin top set up is almost impossible to trim from the helm position.

main sheet mod

I have a C-27 with a cabin top traveller. The routing of the main sheet, back to the mast, then to a deck mounted block, then back to the cockpit was nearly impossible. Trimming from the helm position was IMPOSSIBLE. I added a fiddle block with a set of cam cleats to the traveller car and eliminated the routing of the main sheet back to the mast. Trimming is a breeze; very easy with little effort and I can trimm from the helm.
