I tried out my boom tent arrangement (shown in the link) on Sunday out on the water and it worked fine. There is, of course, the hastle of setting it up but once you get the tarp secured with enough bungy cords, it worked fine for me to get out of the sun while at anchor. The wind was between 5 to 10 knots. Any more (wind) than that would be problematic with this boom-temt set-up, though.

What makes for a successful project like this is the quick and easy setup. Spending time to devise the setup the first time doesn't count, but repeating it after you've figured out the setup is the key. I spent a half day figuring out my winter cover with PVC frame and tarp. But since then I can setup the whole thing in an hour and a half.
