Fairclough

Faircoughsailmakers.com, right here in Connecticut make those fancy full boat covers as well as "Boom tents". They quoted me $1500 for my Cherubini-33. We have quite a few in the boat yards around here, they look well constructed.

Cover

Today I spent $35 for a tarp at HD. Spread the tarp over a 1" PVC tube frame and 'voila' boom tent for dirt cheap. Framing and trap total cost $75. Easy and cheap works for me.

The Cheap Fix

Let me know how the Home Depot special holds up in the first blow this winter.

It seems to me....

....that it's worth a shot. The frame and cover are amazingly strong together and there are no sharp edges to cut the tarp. I also bought the heavy duty tarp not the blue stuff. Now I have nearly 7' standing headroom under the cover to work on the boat which includes the lifelines and boom, when the weather is snoty.

356 boom tent cover

here's a shot of the canvas store's boom tent cover-it's hard to see, but note the zippers and seals around the rigging, and the strain relief hats around the boom end and the corners of traveller-where the blocks would chafe

Cheapo, so far

Well, so far we've noted winds of 30kts. The cheapo boom tent worked out great. Did the same thing with an HD tarp and spinnaker pole on the foredeck. Sure beats $1000+ for shrink wrap or $1500+ for canvas. I'm not knocking the others, but I would rather spend my sailing budget on sails than a cover given a choice.
