Boom Size Cat 22

Hi:I am refitting a C22, a '71 (750) model. It has the original 25.5'mast but no boom. I was given a 10' boom and want cut it down to the 8' standard, my question is if I should/could customize it at 9' for more sailarea/speed? Your comments would be appreciated.Thanks Simon

Boom

The standard boom barely clears the backstay. In fact, if you do not use your boom vang, you boom will rise and catch on the backstay.David

In what condition would your boom ever rise to hit the backstay? My main sheet when hauled in close to the backstay would'nt allow that.Just curious...

The std C22 boom is 10 feet

I just measured it to make sure. The boom is 10 feet long. So, if you have a 10 foot boom, there is no need to cut it down.Regards,Ted

Accidental jibe . . .

is the most common occurance where the boom rises up enough to hit the backstay. The sail is back winded and the sheet is all the way out. There is nothing to hold the boom down, unless you have a boom vang.Regards,Ted

Boom Catches the Backstay

If I do not boom vang down pretty tight, my boom always rises when I jibe. Last weekend we were racing in winds of 20 with gust from "hell". I had my 110 up with the main reefed. I tried putting a little more twist in my main to dump off air, but when I tacked the boom would rise and catch my backstay.David
