Anyone got pix of their boom. Im trying to figure out the topping lift and other boom related fixtures. I have a Kenyon boom. Also I would love to see and hear what you guys are using for backstay adjustment. How much do I need? Also for you serious racers, what are the best(fastest) settings for rig tension? Any pix, numbers, advice, will be greatly appreciated ! BTW, I've only had the boat alittle over a week, so everything is new to me, so even the most basic advice will help. We are all in the same boat :)

I am new as well i raised the mast by hand no winch. I forgot to set-up the topping lift. I will follow the book and not listen to my dad this time I have a question where dose the wire lead connect to and is there a place for the topping lift to connect to on the mast???? Also does everyone else have a rope topping lift. If i ever fig. out how it goes i will take pics and post them in the photos section. Here is my email bondrocks007@hotmail.com

rope topping lift

I have a rope topping lift. It attaches to the mast head, in the far aft hole. I just dont know what the proper setup is on the boom end. If you have'nt noticed, the boat is pretty tippy when hit by a gust. On the San Juan 21 that I race , we use the backstay adjustment(6:1 puchase) to bring the boat down without having to dump the main. On catamarans we pump the downhaul(cunningham) instead of dumping the main. It is tipically 12 or 16:1. This doesnt work as well on big boats, but the backstay works like a charm. We led the backstay up to the front of the cockpit so the crew can adjust it w/o having to move from their upwind position. Mike, lets get together and sail sometime. We are planning a trip to Charleston to cruise the harbor and stay on the boat for a weekend. Love to have a few Hunters there to swap lies and other stories with. Hello? Topping lift?

Don't you guys use the spare main halyard as the topping lift? I thought this was supposed to be standard issue on cruising sailboats (it was on my dad's boats). Advantages include being able to adjust the boom out of the way even whilst under sail. JC II
