Boom roller furling on a P42

I am planning to equip my Passage 42 with a Leisure-Furl in-boom furling mechanism. Have any of you done this already and what is you satisfaction level with the installation ? We will be having a new Mainsail made to fit this application. We plan to retire next Fall and take the boat to the Caribbean for the winter. Thus we have long range cruising in mind. We'd like to hear from anyone who been there, done that if possible.

P42s in the Carib

Another P42 owner,K5SJN@dfw.win-net.org, has taken his boat , Sojourn, from Texas to Grenada and back hitting most of the islands on the way. He retires in January and will be traveling that way again. He's moving his boat down here to FL this winter to get ready. He is in regular SSB contact with another P42 couple who're around Trinidad at last report. My P42 is in Key West but we have a year or two before we hit the long road.

FurlBoom

Hi:After looking into furling booms, I have decided to get a furlboom. It seems to me that this is the best out now and prices are similar. I guess that Hunter maybe agrees because I have heard that they are going to be offering it on the 420 next year. You might want to look into before you by a Leisure furl. It seems to have some definate advantages. My 450 has a delivery date of Oct 1, so I can't tell you how well it works yet. Would be happy to some time in October

P42 In Boom Furling

My P42 has a Hood Stoboom furling system and I now love it.Initially I sweated bullets taking it down until my wife took pity on me and contacted Hood in the UK by e-mail.They responded overnight with a solution and since then the sail furling system works like a treat.The solution was to throw the manual overboard and raise the end of the boom to about two feet above the horizontal. Forget about the 83 degrees from the horizontal in the book. Then mark the topping lift at the appropriate position for repeatability.In applying my new found knowledge the bolt rope neatly wound itself round the spindle, back and forth over a twelve inch length without jamming on the goose neck at the mast.Don't know how much the system cost by I was impressed at the after sales service from Hood.Questions to ask your potential suppliers:- do I need an electric winch to raise the sail? I have one and it's needed.- must I head to wind to furl the sail?- do I need any way on to the flatten the sail as I furl?- can I shorten the sail while under way?
