Question of the day pertains to larger boats and is how do you rig a boom preventer during down wind sailing? Does your system have a quick release without leaving the cockpit? What is fastening system? I have a 450 and need to improve my system for offshore sailing and would be interested in comments. Len Fagan Tale Winds

This device also looks like the Dutchman Boom Lock.

Vang / Preventer

The previousowner of my 376 rigged a snap block on the mast end of the vang. When running we connect the vang to a sahckle on the base of a stancion(spelling?). Works great for S.Cal coastal cruising.

Boombrake

I installed a Dutchman Boombrake on my 460. Not totally necessary but a nice safety item. Works quite well.

installing dutchman boom brake

We have a dutchman boom brake on our 450 but it's not installed properly and doesn't work well. Would much appreciate it if you could supply photos and/or diagrams along with some advice on what's the best approach. many thanks, larry templeton

Scoot Boomlock looks better than Dutchman

We own a Dutchman boom brake and I'm not happy with it. The Boomlock looks like a much better arrangement to me. Not so dependent on geometry of the lines.

Larry, As a point of curisosity. I have a boombrake on my 460. Initially I thought that it was not really working. Some very experienced sailors have told me that it is working. The brake is not really a preventer. If adjusted properly it simply slows the boom down substantially. In light breezes it does in fact work like a preventer. I am still experimenting somewhat with it, but I believe it is doing its job. JR
