Has anyone tried a Boom Kicker on a 272? It seems silly that all of the control lines run aft, yet you still have to go to the mast to loosen the topping lift once the sails are up. Or am I doing something wrong?

Mark, another idea

You don't have to go to the mast to release the topping lift. Install a deck organizer on the port side (opposite the one on the starboard side. The cabintop already has a molded-in platform for it). Install a cleat at the aft end of the cabintop ( again in a position opposite the winch on the starboard side), and you're in business. You'll have to buy a longer piece of line for the new topping lift, but you can always find a use for a spare piece of line. I have three cleats on the port side of the cabin top, one for the topping lift, one for the vang and one for the outhaul. The vang and outhaul are led to Spinlock PX powercleats; the topping lift is led to a standard deck cleat. It's easy to get fair leads to the deck organizer. If memory serves me correctly, I added two blocks at the base of the mast to get fair leads for the vang and outhaul. I also bought new line for the outhaul and vang. Now I only go forward to flake the sail or tinker with the cunningham. Everything else is at hand in the cockpit. Hope this helps. Fair winds, Tom

Why don't you leave the topping lift fixed on ...

... Just adjust it so that the main is low enough so it doesn't pull against the main sheet when sailing. I've sailed with it on for years and never had a problem. Of course if you have a main that is extra long at the leach that may be a problem ... but i haven't seen any 272 with that rig. Vic

I have pictures...

...of all the mods I have made so far and I will be posting them at the link below. I have led all my lines aft including the topping lift (which will go away as soon as I install my rigid vang). I should have this done before the end of the week. Cheers, Bob

All good ideas!

Everyone, Thanks for your insights! Now I have even more courses of action to consider! Tom, check out my post on windows -- it was SO much easier and less destructive than what I had been doing before.
