Boom Internals

One of the internal ropes in my boom is jammed and can't be pulled out. It looks like I'll have to drill out the pop rivets and remove the boom end cap (nearest the mast) to remove and replace the ropes. Has anyone done this before? (1988 H28.5, boom has topping lift, outhaul, and reefing ropes inside)..

Can't you just cut the line?

John: Can't you just cut the line and pull it from the other end? You will probably need a fishtape to pull the new line thru the boom!

Expected maintenance

You'll likely find that your problem is with the tackle inside the boom. Stuck sheaves and such. Pop the rivets out, then repair or replace as needed. The trick is to tap the holes for machine screws. Reassemble with pan head machine screws and coat them with antiseize before reassembly so you can gt it apart easily the next time.

Stop!

Before you go popping rivets and dismantling the boom, try to fish out the snagged end. Failing that, I agree you should cut it closest to the sheeve so you can still pick out the debris and clear the track. Then take the boom home and stand it upright. Using weights on a string, drop a line down and pull the fishline through, attached to the new end of the sheet. The operating time for the entire procedure is about a six-pack.

I had a similar problem...outhaul wouldn't move and was jammed. I dropped the boom, drilled out the rivets, from the aft end, and found the wire inside the boom had jumped the block (yes, there is a 2-part system inside the boom.) While in there, I decided to spruce things up by getting some different-colored lines for the outhaul, 1st and 2nd reef lines. Put it all back together and it now looks real sharp, is easy to know which line to pull depending on the need, and it works great.

6 pack time?

I have no idea how long it takes to consume a 6 pack, but I can guarantee it takes less than an hour to disassemble, make a proper repair, tap the holes and reassemble. Why dick around with strings and weights and drinking songs when the right way is easier?

Just wanted to follow-up... Drilled out the rivets and took off the forward end cap. Just inside was a mess of snarled line (including two blocks).. Snaked a temporary line thru for the outhaul and will replace the rest after my next visit to the boat store... thanks for the comments..
