Boom Internal Lines

It is difficult to know what a previous owner may have had in mind. One or more of the internal lines could also be for reefing.

The line that you referred to for the "foot tightness" is quite often rope-to-cable.

The topping lift is usually a line that goes from the aft end of the boom to the masthead and back down the mast (either internal or external).

I am sure that you will get some more opinions.

On the H23, one line is the outhaul, another is the topping lift and (on mine at least) the third is the aft reefing line. One change I made: I ran a thin wire rope from the mast crane down to about 3 ft from the end of the boom, and attached a small swivel block to the wire. The topping lift is tied to the end of the boom, runs up through the block, back down to one of the sheaves in the boom and forward through the boom to the clutch. Makes it easier to adjust.

My 82 has two reef lines and one outhaul inside the boom. The topping lift is a short piece of line attached to the end of the boom.

I have a diagram somewhere at home with how the lines are run, but from memory, the line on the starboard side of the boom, is for the topping lift, the line in the middle, is the out haul, and the port side line is for reefing.
